Learning and the benefits of swimming for children

Children and swimming
Swimming is a great physical activity for children and gives them a full workout.

The importance of swimming for children and adults

Swimming is a cardiovascular exercise that promotes heart and lung health, improves strength and flexibility, increases endurance and even improves balance and posture. Swimming can help prevent obesity, diabetes, and put less stress on joints and connective tissues. Through the process of swimming, you build lung capacity, strengthen your heart and exercise almost every muscle in your body.

Teaching children to swim

The right approach to learning to swim is very important for children, as it is essential that they treat swimming as a relaxing and fun activity, rather than as a sporting activity that is forced on them. It is also important that children are not afraid of water. When to start swimming lessons depends on the child, as some children learn spontaneously and earlier, while others take appropriate swimming lessons. A child should have no fear of the water, of wetting his eyes or of submerging his head in the water, so the best time to learn is from the age of three, when the child’s movements are becoming more coordinated and efficient. Through swimming, children develop their motor skills, strengthen their muscle tone, strengthen their heart and gain fitness. In practice, swimming is an activity that will give children a thorough workout. It is also important not to put a time frame on your child – for example, that they should learn to swim in a week or two – because it is important that they do not feel pressure when they are learning.

The process of learning to swim
The process of teaching children to swim needs to be approached in a holistic and thoughtful way.

The process of learning to swim

Initially, we carry out water adaptation:

  1. adapting to water resistance,
  2. head diving,
  3. exhaling into the water,
  4. underwater viewing,
  5. buoyancy and glide on the water.
  6. Then the breaststroke technique is taught with the aids used until the child can swim independently.
