Fairy-tale creatures in children’s imagination

Wood elves, golden birds, good fairies, fearless and brave teddy bears, toothy mice, St Nicholas, Santa Claus and Father Frost are creatures that have a home in children’s imaginations and positively reinforce them. They allow them to escape into a fairytale world, fill their hearts with warmth, put a smile on their faces and, above all, protect them from the scary monsters that are also part of their imagination. Children believe in and identify with mythical creatures, which leads to positive mental development – they come to believe in kindness, positive relationships, mutual help, love, magic and even magical miracles. It is wise to allow children to believe in fairy-tale creatures for as long as possible, as this helps them to develop into good people, while also stimulating their imagination.

“Mummy, is there really a Santa Claus?”

Surely this is a question that every mum faces when her child reaches the age of around 7. Children begin to question the existence of these beings as they develop and strengthen their logical reasoning. Then they start to realise that Santa Claus could possibly be Mummy or Daddy, and when they ask us questions like that, let’s ask ourselves whether or not it’s time to tell them the truth. When it comes to the moment when the truth is revealed, it is important to explain to the child the meaning of giving, which is not linked to material goods, but to strengthening positive relationships, love, attention and so on. Better still, it is better to reveal the truth in a way that gives clues, with the intention that the child discovers the truth for himself, so that he will not be disappointed, but proud of himself.

Children train their brains

When children are faced with dilemmas and questions such as how can the good man Santa Claus give presents to all the children on the planet in one night and enter the house through the chimney, leaving the presents under the tree completely unheard and sneaking out, they are training their brains. They are looking for solutions in the same way they might one day look for solutions to an important scientific problem. Their critical reasoning is strengthened and logical thinking is stimulated.
